Cowboys' Ryan brings family to see 'when we win the East'

IRVING, Texas -- The family of Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is already in New York to do some sightseeing before Sunday's NFC East showdown game with the Giants.

Ryan left no doubt that the biggest sight to see will be at MetLife Stadium.

“I want them to be there when we win the East, and I’ll probably steal a couple of [championship] T-shirts and make sure they get them, because that’s what we’re there for,” Ryan said Friday at the Cowboys practice facility.

Ryan is the fraternal twin brother of Jets head coach Rex Ryan. The Ryans share a certain bravado in addition to DNA as Rob Ryan all but guaranteed a victory for his family.

“I know they’re going to see the Empire State Building, probably see their Uncle Rex and Cousin Matthew [Russo, a retired FDNY fire marshal],” Ryan said. “But they’re there to watch their dad become a champion, again. So that’s what we’re going to do.”

When Classical Musicians Call In Sick

Anthony Fogg got the call on a Tuesday night this past summer. Because of continuing problems with his right hand, pianist Leon Fleisher was canceling his Friday performance at Tanglewood, the Massachusetts summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Fogg, the BSO's artistic administrator, immediately got on the phone with the concert's conductor, Hans Graf. Their initial impulse was to find a musician as venerable and well known as Mr. Fleisher who could play the piece he was scheduled to perform, Mozart's Concerto No. 12 in A Major. Or, if not that exact concerto, another by Mozart or perhaps an early Beethoven bagatelle to serve as a counterweight to the second—heavier—portion of the program, Mahler's Fifth.

But eventually a different solution emerged. "We thought, 'If we're replacing someone who is older, we might be better off getting an up- and-coming player, preferably a pianist because pianists are very popular with our audiences,'" Mr. Fogg recalled. The list of possibilities included 29-year-old Orion Weiss, who'd recently worked with Mr. Graf and had had a fellowship at Tanglewood.

So there Mr. Weiss was, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 in C on July 29, a performance the Berkshire Review website characterized as "alert and full of felicitous details."

On Broadway when the star can't go on, management simply taps the eager understudy. When classical musicians and singers bow out, an occupational hazard what with all that international travel and all those international viruses, there's generally no backup waiting in the wings. Thus, in September there was much hand-wringing—and much baton passing—when a back injury sidelined Metropolitan Opera maestro James Levine for the season. The Met's principal guest conductor, Fabio Luisi, stepped in—dropping out of engagements in Rome, Genoa, Vienna and San Francisco—necessitating considerable scrambling to find substitutes.

The best that management can hope for in such instances is fair warning. "We may get an email saying, 'Just a heads up. So-and-so singer isn't feeling well, isn't canceling yet but fyi . . . ,'" said Chad Smith, vice president of artistic planning for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. "That's an indication that you need to get your ducks in a row."

Often, however, artists will hold off, hoping for a swift return to good health. "They want to perform," Mr. Fogg said, "so they wait as long as they can and then realize they won't be well enough."

That's when the all-points bulletin goes out to artists' management companies and to orchestra administrators. "Since the Internet, it's become easier. You can quickly gather information about the whereabouts of a potential replacement," said Mr. Fogg, who, rather like a handicapper at the track, makes it a point to stay abreast of new and midcareer talent—and their fortes. "You know who's had great success recently and who, maybe, isn't performing as well as they did 10 years ago," he added.

All things being equal, orchestras and impresarios want both to get a marquee name and to keep the scheduled program intact. If the priority is retaining the program, "an orchestra might prefer a younger, less celebrated performer who can play that piece rather than to have a well-known artist come in and play whatever he has at his fingertips," said James Egelhofer, an artist manager at the agency IMG Artists.

It's particularly challenging at a place, like the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where there is considerable contemporary programming. "Finding people who can step in and do those pieces is difficult," Mr. Smith said.

Of course, the issue isn't simply how well the replacement plays his instrument—it's how well he plays with others. "There are a lot of sensitive artistic concerns when you're trying to match a soloist with a conductor," Mr. Egelhofer said.

For orchestras and impresarios, a cancellation can be as much opportunity as nightmare. Early this year, the Boston Symphony had to find a conductor to take on two programs that an ailing Sir Colin Davis had been slated to lead. The conductor for the second week was Stéphane Denève, a young French conductor who couldn't do the Sibelius repertoire that had been planned. "But the opportunity to work with him," Mr. Fogg said, "outweighed our desire to keep the program in place."

Similarly, when, a few seasons ago, conductor Yuri Temirkanov had to pull out of a number of concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Spaniard Pablo Heras-Casado was invited to step in. "You look to see who's creating some sort of buzz, and Pablo was someone I'd been hearing very good things about," Mr. Smith said. "We were lucky to get him for his American debut."

For the replacement artist, it could be the start of something big. There's a lure and legend surrounding cancellations. Consider the 25-year-old Leonard Bernstein stepping in to conduct the New York Philharmonic, in 1943, when Bruno Walter was laid low by the flu. Or the 17-year-old Lang Lang replacing an ailing André Watts for a 1999 performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Chicago Symphony at the Ravinia Festival. Or the young Michael Tilson Thomas stepping in midconcert, in 1969, to finish the job for the indisposed conductor William Steinberg at the BSO and, years later, the untried Esa-Pekka Salonen stepping in for Mr. Thomas with the London Philharmonia Orchestra.

Yoheved ("Veda") Kaplinsky, head of the piano department at the Juilliard School, said that students are "incessantly made aware" of the career benefits of being a replacement artist. "Even if you get management today, you're low man," she said. "Your best chances are that someone will cancel and the talent agency will throw something your way. A manager called one of my former students and asked her, on eight days' notice, to replace Leon [Fleisher] at Ravinia. I'm sure she was not the first person called, but she was the first one available with good credentials."

To improve their odds, "I tell my students very often that they should have in their repertoire some of the less well-known concerti," Ms. Kaplinsky continued. "Everyone can play Rachmaninoff's Second and Tchaikovsky's First. But few can play the Corigliano."

And where does the audience figure in all this, the people who, having paid for Peter Serkin, want Mr. Serkin? "There are always going to be people who are buying a ticket to see X artist and will be upset," said Mr. Smith of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. "But they understand that this is a dynamic process. People get sick. It's about having the trust of our patrons so they know that a person we're putting in as a replacement will intrigue them and engage them and maybe make them hear the music differently."

If the audience has paid for an artist "of great, great distinction that they rarely get to hear, there can be a sense of great disappointment," agreed the BSO's Mr. Fogg. "But if the replacement is a young artist, listeners may feel, 'This is someone's big break, the night people will be talking about in 40 years—and I'm here witnessing it!'"

Ms. Kaufman writes about culture and the arts for the Journal.

Looking back through the years at the Giants-Jets civil war

The Giants and Jets renew regular-season hostilities Saturday for the 12th time in history with more than just bragging rights on the line — their precarious playoff hopes also hang in the balance. The Giants hold a 7-4 all-time edge in the series that has featured everything from late-game Joe Namath heroics to stifling Big Blue defensive efforts to a postgame Bill Parcells fit (Jets version). With the Christmas Eve showdown looming, The Post takes a look back inside each of the previous 11 editions of the pigskin sibling rivalry:

Nov. 1, 1970

Giants 22, Jets 10

AP

OFF BROADWAY: Joe Namath pulls into the end zone on a bootleg during the Jets’ overtime win at the Yale Bowl in 1974.

(Shea Stadium)

Recap: In the first meeting between the two teams, Jets quarterback Al Woodall connected with George Nock for an 8-yard touchdown pass to give the Jets a 7-0 lead. The teams then traded field goals, giving the Jets a 10-3 lead early in the third quarter. But the rest of the quarter was all Giants: a safety and Fran Tarkenton touchdown throws to Bob Tucker and Clifton McNeil put the Giants up 19-10. They added a field goal in the fourth quarter for a 22-10 victory.

Significance: This was the Jets’ first year in the NFL after playing in the AFL for their first 10 seasons. Joe Namath broke his wrist two games prior to this one, and Weeb Ewbank’s Jets — less than two years removed from their Super Bowl III triumph — stumbled to a 4-10 record, missing the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. The Giants ended the season at 9-5, missing the playoffs after losing to the Rams, 31-3, on the final day of the regular season. Despite not making the postseason, head coach Alex Webster was named the NFL Coach of the Year.

Nov. 10, 1974

Jets 26, Giants 20 (OT)

(Giants home game, at Yale Bowl)

Recap: With Yankee Stadium closed for renovations and Giants Stadium under construction, the game was played in New Haven, Conn. A close game throughout, Craig Morton piloted the Giants to a 20-13 lead in the fourth quarter. Joe Namath, who had missed the first Giants game, tied the game with a 3-yard bootleg touchdown run with eight minutes left in regulation — his first rushing touchdown in five seasons. Each team missed potential game-winning field goals before Namath threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Emerson Boozer in overtime to give the Jets the win. It was the first regular-season NFL game to be decided in overtime after a sudden-death extra period was adopted prior to the season.

Significance: Neither team was very good — each had a 2-7 record following the game. But the Charley Winner-coached Jets, led by Namath, the eventual comeback player of the year, finished the season with a 7-7 record. The loss to the Jets began a six-game losing streak for Bill Arnsparger’s Giants, who finished with a 2-12 record — their worst in the then-50-year history of the franchise.

Winnipeg is still special to Teemu Selanne

Teemu Selanne

Ducks forward Teemu Selanne's remarkable NHL career began in Winnipeg, where he scored a rookie record 76 goals during the 1992-93 season. (Al Bello / Allsport / January 27, 1995)

Imagine life without Teemu Selanne ever playing for the Winnipeg Jets, taking those 76 goals and 132 points and scoring them in his rookie season for another Canadian team.

It is certainly worth recounting what almost didn't happen now that the Ducks' Selanne is about to settle into the warm (well, metaphorically speaking) Manitoba civic embrace Saturday. The adopted son is returning for an eagerly awaited homecoming when the Ducks play the Jets.

Selanne's rookie season was with the Jets in 1992-93, and if Winnipeg had not stepped up financially, he would have been playing right wing for the Calgary Flames. The Flames first tried to trade for him and then came up with a $2.7-million offer sheet for Selanne, a sizable number in those days. The Jets swallowed hard and matched.

"There was some controversy around it all because here was this guy coming from Europe who was getting which was then a very big contract for an entry-level guy," said Selanne's longtime agent, Don Baizley, who lives in Winnipeg.

"I always thought he [Selanne] was motivated by the speculation that, geez, this guy wasn't worth this money, that kind of stuff. Then he came in and got 76 goals."

Talk about money for something.

Seventy-six goals and an unabashed joy in playing quickly erased the notion that $2.7 million was too much. Selanne would play for the Jets until financial considerations became an issue, again, for the franchise and he was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 7, 1996.

His magic scoring touch followed him to California and he would go on to score 50-plus goals in back-to-back seasons with the Ducks. He twice made the league's All-Star first team, once with the Jets and once with the Ducks, and won the Stanley Cup in 2007 in his second stint with Anaheim. Even in his 19th season, the ageless Selanne is leading the Ducks in scoring. He has 646 career goals (14th all-time) and 1,370 points (23rd all-time).

The staying power of the relationship between Selanne and Winnipeg has been fascinating, surviving the trade and, later, the Jets' move to Phoenix. With the NHL returning to Manitoba this season after the Atlanta Thrashers were sold and moved to Winnipeg, it represented a chance to tie up loose ends for Selanne, 41.

"When I got traded I didn't really have a chance to say goodbye to the people and the city," Selanne said this week on a conference call. "It was the next day I am gone. It's pretty tough when you get traded. Everything is rushing and you have to be gone the next day. That's why I'm really looking forward to going back there."

That goes for his family and friends. His mother, wife and their four sons, and a number of friends from Finland will be on hand this weekend for the occasion. Selanne's oldest son, Eemil, was born a few weeks after the trade from Winnipeg to Anaheim.

The interest in Selanne is so high that the Ducks will be holding a news conference in a hotel ballroom Saturday, not at the morning skate at the MTS Centre.

As for the game, the Jets plan to honor Selanne with a video tribute, to be unveiled during the first TV timeout.

Gentlemen, start your ovations.

"Winnipeg was really, really special," Selanne said. "The people, there's a reason why their plates on the cars have 'Friendly Manitoba' because it's a really friendly city and unbelievable fans and it was just a great 4½ years there."

Ultimamente las lluvias han dejado pequeos charcos en los campos de los alrededores y esto es motivo para que multiples especies de aves ( teros, patos, garzas, palomas, etc) encuentren un lugar para nadar y alimentarse.
Lately, rains have left puddles in the fields around and this is grounds for many species of birds (lapwings, ducks, herons, pigeons, etc.) find a place to swim and feed.
