RBS Launches Sale of Jet-Leasing Unit

Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC on Friday said it launched the sale of its airplane-leasing subsidiary, in a deal that analysts say could fetch up to $8 billion.

RBS Aviation Capital is the world's fifth-largest leasing company by fleet value, according to consultants Ascend Ltd. The operation is also likely to be one of the largest leasing companies put up for direct sale in the near future, industry officials have speculated.

RBS said in a statement that "the sale process for RBS Aviation Capital is under way following significant expressions of interest from potential bidders in the business in recent months."

The giant British bank will now begin distributing detailed information about its leasing unit to bidders that meet certain criteria. The timing of a final deal isn't set, and RBS could postpone the sale if it isn't satisfied with offers. RBS, which was taken over by the British government during the financial crisis in 2008, deemed its airplane-leasing unit noncore and in 2009 hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to assess options for a sale. The transaction wasn't immediately pursued due to market conditions.

Over recent months, the aviation and airplane-leasing industries world-wide have picked up significantly. On Wednesday, for example, AMR Corp.'s American Airlines announced a 460-plane order from Airbus and Boeing Co., and almost half of the planes could be leased, people involved in the deal said. Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautics Defence & Space Co.

U.S. insurance giant American International Group Inc., another financial institution that struggled during the financial crisis and was taken over by the U.S. government, is also now considering the sale of its airplane-leasing business, International Lease Finance Corp., according to people familiar with the talks. AIG is likely to sell part of ILFC through an initial public offering because the world's second-biggest airplane lessor is too big for a direct sale to an investment group or another lessor, these people said.

In April, Air Lease Corp., a new lessor started last year by ILFC founder and former chief executive Steven Udvar-Hazy, successfully listed on the New York Stock Exchange. That deal has sparked much greater investor interest in the sector, officials at several rival lessors have said.

RBS Aviation Capital owns and manages a fleet of roughly 250 jetliners, valued at around $8 billion. Despite its parent bank's problems, the unit has remained profitable over recent years, according to people familiar with the business, although RBS doesn't disclose the unit's financial data.

The lessor invests mainly in smaller jetliners, like Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, which boast strong demand and are easily traded. As part of its strategy to maintain a young, competitive fleet, the company has profitably sold 170 airplanes from its books, it says.

"RBS Aviation Capital's management team has delivered strong business and financial performance over the past decade," the company said in its statement. The unit's chief executive, Peter Barrett, stepped into the role in 2004 and has more than 20 years of experience in airplane leasing.

RBS bought the business in May 2001, when it was a boutique Irish lessor called IAMG. IAMG's founder, Domhnal Slattery, persuaded RBS to invest and expand the unit following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the bet paid off as the aviation industry recovered. Mr. Slattery later left RBS and last year started a new lessor, Avolon, hiring away several staff members from the RBS operation.

Kanitha enjoys the vista in Hohe Tauern National Park

Please take your time... to View it large on black

In terms of total area, the Raurisertal is one of the largest expanses of valley in the Hohe Tauern range. In contrast to many others, it is not used merely as a grazing area during the summer, having been an important site of settlement for many centuries. Since 1984, large areas in both of its side valleys, the Httwinkeltal and Seidlwinkeltal, have belonged to the Hohe Tauern National Park. Together with the National Park Region which surrounds the Rauris Valley, we encounter special features and natural treasures that are so rich in variety, we are often said to be a separate “world” within the Hohe Tauern National Park. The national park Hohe Tauern is with 1,800 km2 the biggest protective area of Austria and the whole east alps. It applies about wide primeval landscapes with glaciers and cliff faces, alpine pastures and cultured alpine pastures. The variety of 266 3 thousand mountain picks, 1000 mountain lakes, 342 glaciers with a total area of 185 km2 as well as the rich fauna and flora fill with enthusiasm since centuries. Over 295 km of marked hiking paths give you the perfect opportunity to get to know the beautiful Rauris Valley. The ultimate nature adventure. Offering beautiful scenery and outstanding hiking are the romantic Seidlwinkel Valley, with the 500-year-old Rauriser Tauernhaus, the Krumltal and Brualm where you'll also walk alongside the roosts of the recently reintroduced Bearded Vultures. And let's not forget the Gasibach and Forsterbach valleys, as well as the Httwinkltal and the uniquely beautiful Kolm-Saigurn valley head. And there are so many other delightful, adventure-filled hiking destinations, many of which even feature country inns alongside the trail. Find a balance between soul, spirit and body.

Adventure-filled hiking in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern - Austria. Kanitha is enjoying the vista in Hohe Tauern. Great fun during our hiking in the wild and primeval landscape with the Ritterkopf mountain in the background. The Naturfreundeweg starts at 1500m and is always steep uphill to the Naturfreundehaus-building at about 2175m. Once there, you'll be able to enjoy glorious views of the area's 3,000-meter peaks of the Sonnblick, Scharek and Hocharn.

Two years after Taconic tragedy, mother who lost her three daughters speaks out.

Jackie, Warren and her <a href=three daughters before the crash. (Photo Sabo/New York Daily News)" title="Jackie, Warren and her three daughters before the crash. (Photo Sabo/New York Daily News)"/>

“When something this terrible happens, your brain simply can’t process it—or at least mine couldn’t,” writes Jackie Hance, two years after she lost her three young daughters in a bizarre car collision that made national headlines . “For weeks after the accident I’d wake up thinking it was that Sunday again and that the girls were heading home. And every day my husband or one of my friends would have to tell me the awful news all over again.”

The July 26 events surrounding the collision, that killed eight people, including Jackie's daughters —Alyson,7, Katie, 5, and Emma, 8—  remains a mystery and the subject an upcoming HBO documentary, airing two years to the day that Jackie lost her children. Now Jackie, who has not seen nor sanctioned the film, decided to tell her own side of the story in the August issue of Lady’s Home Journal. Hers is one of unimaginable  grief, and the human ability to cope, pushed to its limits.

Diane Schuler, Jackie’s sister and law, was driving her two children and, three nieces home from a camping weekend upstate, when she drove the wrong way down the parkway.

“Then came the conversation that I replay in my head a dozen times a day,” writes Jackie in the magazine, available on newsstands Wednesday. “On the drive back home, Emma, our oldest, called us from the car and said, ‘Something is wrong with Aunt Diane.’ I heard other children crying in the background and then the phone cut out. Warren called back immediately and when he spoke to his sister, she didn’t sound right. He told her not to drive—to pull over right away. We thought she was having a stroke. He got Emma on the phone to describe exactly where they were. I stayed home and called 911; Warren raced off to try to find them.”

But my then, Diane, her daughter Erin, and Jackie’s three daughters were gone, as were the three men in the SUV hit by Schuler’s car. Only Diane’s 7-year-old-son, Bryan, survived the crash.

“He was in the car, the last person to see and hear my girls. I have so many questions, too many for a little boy to answer. I have to be able to trust myself around him and right now I don’t," writes Jackie. "I want to reach out and hug him and at the same time try to shake answers out of him, answers he doesn’t have. So for now, I stay away.”

After receiving initial toxicology reports suggesting Diane had twice the legal blood alchohal limit and had smoked marajuana, Jackie and her husband Warren, Diane’s sister, severed ties with the Schuler family. But questions still remain about what happened only minutes before Emma’s frightened phone-call. The HBO Documentary, which was done with Diane's husband Daniel’s permission, raises questions about the toxicology reports, Diane's sobriety and the last images of her seen on rest stop cameras.  Two years after the fact, the evidence confounds as to how or if Diane, a loyal and trustworthy mom, even in Jackie's own words,  ended up inebriated on the road.

“When something like this happens, you want to be able to hate someone. When I see the misery in Warren’s eyes, I know what he’s thinking. It was his sister who did this, his sister who destroyed our lives," she writes. "I can’t blame him for her actions. And since Diane’s not here, I can’t take out my anger, my confusion or my heartache on her. There’s no one left to hate. And anyway, we both loved her very much."

But the tragedy has fractured their relationship with Diane's husband Daniel and put their financial stability in question.  “The relatives of two of the people who died in the SUV (the one Diane hit head on) were bringing a lawsuit against Warren.  The car Diane drove was my minivan, which was registered in Warren’s name.  By some horrible irony, Warren could be taken to court.  While everything that mattered was already gone, everything that remained could still be taken.”

Despite the tests on their marriage over the past two years, Jackie and Warren have stuck with each other. “ I am holding on to my husband and to the idea that we can survive this. But I have to admit that it’s not easy to do.”

After the accident, Jackie found it difficult to function, haunted by memories of her daughters during even the most basic activities . “I used to love to cook, especially with the girls. I can still hear Alyson bounding into the kitchen, saying, “Yummy, Mommy! What smells so good?” The memory was so strong that after the accident I stopped cooking completely. Maybe someday I’ll be able to try again.”

Slowly, Jackie and Warren are rebuilding their strength, developing The Hance Family Foundation, a community-centered non-profit aimed at boosting young girls’ self-esteem. It was a way of keeping their daughter’s memory and potential alive. More recently, Jackie received an IVF treatment and got pregnant right away. Now she and Warren are expecting their fourth child in the fall. Despite her gratitude, Jackie has reservations—fears even.

“I want to be excited, but I know how random life can be, and how unfair,” she writes. “However much we try to protect our children, the worst can happen.”

Poor Dodgers lose fifth in a row, 5-3

Jamey Carroll, Andre Ethier, James Lone

A trio of Dodgers -- Jamey Carroll, Andre Ethier and James Loney -- could not come up with the ball during the first inning of a 5-3 loss to the Mets on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium. (Lawrence K. Ho / Los Angeles Times)

While players warmed up on the field Wednesday, the public-address system at Dodger Stadium played an instrumental version of an old rap song by the Wu-Tang Clan called "C.R.E.A.M." — an acronym for "Cash Rules Everything Around Me."

The musical selection provided an appropriate soundtrack for the evening.

Dodgers finally show some punch, in support of Andre Ethier

The Dodgers are bankrupt. The visiting New York Mets are facing a $1-billion lawsuit as a result of their ownership group's ties to financial felon Bernard Madoff.

Both teams are strapped for cash and appear to be preparing to unload salaries leading up to the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline.

The last-place Dodgers were even poorer after dropping a 5-3 decision to the Mets, extending their losing streak to five games and dropping them a season-worst 14 games under .500.

Even with most-valuable-player candidate Jose Reyes sidelined because of a strained hamstring, the Mets moved to within one victory of a sweep in the four-game series.

The Mets had a rare opportunity to mock an organization in worse shape than theirs.

One player joked to the New York Daily News that compared to the Dodgers, the Mets "look like a model franchise."

Mets owner Fred Wilpon at least has the backing of Commissioner Bud Selig, who appears determined to remove Frank McCourt as the owner of the Dodgers.

The Dodgers' dysfunction, both on and off the field, has resulted in trade rumors involving Hiroki Kuroda.

Kuroda has an earned-run average of 3.06, but he was only 6-10 after the game on Wednesday. The disparity between his performance and won-loss record has led other teams to wonder if the 36-year-old would waive the full no-trade clause in his one-year, $12-million contract.

"At this point, I haven't been told anything," Kuroda said. "But as long as there is a possibility that this team can reach the playoffs, I don't want to think about anything like that."

Kuroda's latest loss didn't rank high on his list of undeserved defeats, as he was charged with four runs and eight hits in six innings.

A two-out double by Lucas Duda in the fourth inning put the Mets ahead, 1-0.

With the score tied, 1-1, in the sixth inning, Kuroda again had a two-out meltdown.

Carlos Beltran, who reached third base on a throwing error by left fielder du jour Eugenio Velez, scored on a wild pitch to reclaim the lead for the Mets.

Duda then singled, as did Josh Thole, and both scored on a double by Ruben Tejada to increase the Mets' advantage to 4-1.

The Dodgers scored twice off Mets starter Jon Neise in the bottom of the inning, as Andre Ethier hit a run-scoring single and Juan Uribe a sacrifice fly.

The attendance was announced at 31,005 fans, but there were so few Dodgers fans in the building that Mets fans seated on the first base side were able to start a clearly audible chant of "Let's go Mets!" in the ninth inning. The chant was drowned out by Dodgers fans, who countered with a chant of their own.
