Hedger pausing on print

Reclusive Randy Smith’s Alden Global has been building a national newspaper empire, but after suffering some losses he may be looking to recycle that idea.

Smith last fall bought a roughly 30 percent share of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News and the expectation was he would build on that stake.

But the owners of the Philadelphia Media Network are now in the middle of an auction to sell it for roughly $100 million, and Smith so far is on the sellers’ side of the table, showing no indication he or Alden will be a buyer, a source close to the situation said.

RANDY SMITH On the sellers’ side.

RANDY SMITH On the sellers’ side.

There are several suitors presently meeting with company management, and they will be asked to make binding offers in a few weeks, the source said.

Alden and other hedge funds including Angelo, Gordon bought the papers for $139 million, and in a sale would likely lose a relatively small amount of money, the source said.

Meanwhile, Smith owns a significant stake in Reader’s Digest, and this week the troubled business sold its growth engine, allrecipes.com, for $175 million so it could repay some of its loans.

Alden also owns Connecticut newspaper conglomerate Journal Register, and about 40 percent of Freedom Communications, which owns 100 mostly West Coast daily and weekly newspapers, including the Orange County Register.

Smith is also the largest shareholder in Gannett and controls MediaNews, owner of the Denver Post and San Jose Mercury News.

An Alden spokesman said, “We very strongly disagree that we have changed our commitment” to media, declining to speak further.

Alden owns a significant amount of debt of bankrupt Tribune. It’s possible that, when Tribune emerges from Chapter 11 later this year, Alden will convert its loans into equity, giving it a sizable stake and moving it even further into the newspaper business.

Long Islander Smith is a pioneer in distressed investing, buying out-of-favor assets.

“I’d guess that 50 percent of all people in the distressed-investing business were trained by him or someone that he trained or someone that they trained,” a competing distressed-investor said.

Smith in the 1980s learned the trade at Bear Stearns and then in 1985 left to form his own firm, R.D. Smith & Co.

Only a few years ago, he launched Alden Global, which manages roughly $3 billion. Its largest allocation is in media (including television stations).

Some of the results have not been pretty.

Alden, in February 2010, when the company was buying a significant stake in Reader’s Digest, was “misled about how the business was doing and how quickly it could take costs out,” the source close to the situation said.

A second source confirmed that Smith feels like he was sold a bill of goods.

Last year, Reader’s Digest, after emerging from bankruptcy, replaced much of the board and bounced Mary Berner as CEO. Her replacement, Tom Williams, the former CFO, lasted only five months before a board member took over and accelerated the sell-off of properties.

Rehn Sees Need for More Greek Loans

DAVOS, Switzerland—European Union economics commissioner Olli Rehn said euro-zone governments may have to increase their contribution to Greece's debt deal and declared he was hopeful agreements could be struck soon to increase euro-zone bailout funds and International Monetary Fund resources.

Davos may be stealing all the attention as financial markets hope for progress in the Greek debt negotiations. But should they be watching the yields on Portuguese bonds instead? Dow Jones's Terry Roth and Art Patnaude discuss.

At the World Economic Forum

George Soros attended the World Economic Forum Thursday.

He also made an appeal to the U.S. and other countries not to block an expansion in IMF resources—even if they didn't want to contribute directly themselves.

"It's in the interests of all concerned that we conclude a voluntary deal [for Greece] in the coming days, preferably in January rather than February," he said in an interview while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, left, talks with EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn at a European Union finance ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday.

He said once a deal was reached in Greece's debt-restructuring talks, a revised debt-sustainability analysis would follow—after which the contribution of other euro-zone member states might have to be adjusted. "I don't rule out a small adjustment of lending needs of the euro-area member states," he said.

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday shrugged off suggestions that public creditors to Greece should increase their contribution, stressing that debt restructuring talks with Greece must first of all focus on a voluntary restructuring deal.

"We work on the basis that first of all a voluntary debt restructuring has to be negotiated in Greece. The criteria for this have clearly been set in October," Ms. Merkel told reporters. "Growth assumptions have changed in the meantime. That's why finance ministers have asked to conduct further negotiations. I think these are on the right track."

Mr. Rehn said he was hopeful an agreement could be secured soon to lift the current €500 billion ($655.3 billion) cap on the resources of the euro-zone's bailout funds by allowing the resources of the current temporary fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, and the future permanent fund, the European Stability Mechanism, to be combined.

But he said it was important to avoid "a chicken-and-egg deadlock" in which contributors to an expansion in IMF resources held back awaiting a formal agreement on euro-zone bailout-fund expansion. That latter agreement will come in March at the earliest, while a meeting of finance ministers of the Group of 20 in late February in Mexico City is the most likely venue for a decision on the IMF.

"It's important that all the key members of the IMF contribute to an increase of IMF resources, including the United States because the U.S. has so many times underlined the importance of resolving the euro-area debt crisis. If a country can't make a concrete contribution, at least it's important not to block an overall agreement on IMF resources."

Mr. Rehn said in dealing with longer-term strains within the euro zone, "it's important that surplus countries and deficit countries do their part." For surplus countries, this would involve "further strengthening domestic demand essentially for structural reforms and possibly through investment in infrastructure that would have a positive impact on growth."

—Andrea Thomas contributed to this article.

Average Silicon Valley Tech Salary Passes $100,000

Average annual salaries for Silicon Valley technology workers surpassed the $100,000 mark last year, according to a new survey, pushed higher by the strength of the region's latest boom.

Tech-jobs website operator Dice Holdings Inc. said salaries for software and other engineering professionals in California's Silicon Valley rose 5.2% to an average $104,195 last year, outstripping the average 2% increase, to $81,327, in tech-workers' salaries nationwide. It was the first time since Dice began the salary survey in 2001 that the wage barometer broke the $100,000 barrier, said Tom Silver, a Dice senior vice president.

The findings come amid a Web boom that has fueled companies such as Facebook Inc., Zynga Inc. and Twitter Inc. Last year, several of the companies—including LinkedIn Corp. and Zynga—went public, with Facebook poised for an initial public offering this year. Their success has sparked the creation of numerous new start-ups, which in turn has spurred a hiring war for software engineers and others.

In contrast, job growth elsewhere in the nation has remained relatively slow. U.S. employers added 200,000 jobs in December, and the unemployment rate ticked down to 8.5%, its lowest level since early 2009. But it is unclear how sustainable such gains may be.

"There's a tussle for talent growing in Silicon Valley and employers have to pay up," said Mr. Silver. Overall, tech-job postings in Silicon Valley on Dice rose to 5,026 earlier this month, up 26% from 3,974 a year ago, he said, even as tech-jobs postings nationwide only rose 11% over the same period.

The hiring boom is evident at SmartRecruiters Inc., a San Francisco start-up that offers a free recruiting tool. Itclosed a $5 million venture-capital financing this month and wants to add 40 employees by this summer, said Chief Executive Jerome Ternynck.

But with many job candidates receiving multiple offers, "the limiting factor is the ability to find the right people," said Mr. Ternynck. "We'd hire them all tomorrow if we could."

Silicon Valley's job-market strength has also had a halo effect on bonuses. Silicon Valley tech-worker bonuses jumped 13% last year to an average $12,450, versus an 8% increase to $8,769 nationwide, according to Dice. Meanwhile, hourly contractor rates in Silicon Valley rose 11% last year to an average $74 an hour, compared with $63 an hour nationally, said Dice.

Ffrith Beach Dunes

I love the beach. It's been a dull week and I've felt really cooped up with me working from home. Whilst it was far from a great day today, you can still get down onto the beach, have a walk and feel alive. The sun broke through, the wind cleaned out the cobwebs and the three of us just had a great hour or so out stretching our legs.

It's nice to look at too, so I thought I'd share....

UNHCR News Story: Farouq Ali "I have won a new life."

Farouq Ali
UNHCR photo

Farouq Ali "I have won a new life."

Farouq Ali is the father of four and a refugee from Iraq. He had completed two university degrees and was working as a manager for a local firm in Baghdad, Iraq, when he began receiving death threats from local militants. One day he received this text on his mobile phone: "We will put an end to your life tomorrow." The same day, six people were murdered as part of sectarian violence in his neighborhood. Farouq fled with his second family (he left two sons from a first marriage behind) to neighboring Syria, where, with the help of UNHCR, the family was selected for resettlement to Liechtenstein. When that application stalled, he chose to be resettled in the U.S. . Farouq now lives in the Massachusetts town of Lowell, where he works with other resettled refugees. "The last country I was thinking of was the USA, actually," he said of his adopted home. "But Europe closed all its doors before Iraqis... I don't know why." Leaving Iraq, he said, was a huge blow, but he does not consider himself "a big loser": "On the contrary I have won a new life."

Giants have to beat another Ryan — Falcons’ Matt Ryan

The Giants will have to beat yet another Ryan to keep their season alive.

After dispatching Rex Ryan and his twin brother Rob Ryan the past two weeks just to get into the playoffs, Big Blue now is tasked with sending Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan — no relation — home for good in the wild-card round Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

History says toppling this Ryan won’t be nearly as difficult as the previous two.

Despite his gaudy regular-season statistics, No. 3 overall pick pedigree and catchy “Matty Ice” nickname, Atlanta’s celebrated passer has yet to win a playoff game in four NFL seasons.

GOING FOR WON: Fourth-year quarterback Matt Ryan will be looking for his first playoff victory when he faces the Giants on Sunday.

Getty Images

GOING FOR WON: Fourth-year quarterback Matt Ryan will be looking for his first playoff victory when he faces the Giants on Sunday.

Not only that, but Ryan is less than a full season removed from his personal low point — a 48-21 rout at home last January at the hands of the wild-card Packers after leading the Falcons to home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

“You can definitely rattle him and cause him to give up on plays early,” a veteran NFC scout told The Post yesterday. “He does not react well to a hand in his face or pressure up the middle, which is [the Giants’] strength with all those pass rushers they have.”

Ryan doesn’t get sacked very often, at least not in the regular season, enduring just 85 of them in four years combined despite making 62 starts in that span.

Ryan isn’t very mobile and doesn’t have the quickest release, but is able to avoid pressure because the Falcons’ power running game is so dangerous, thereby making play-action a very effective weapon for Atlanta.

The Falcons also have given Ryan several terrific weapons, including future Hall-of-Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez, wideout Roddy White and first-round rookie receiver Julio Jones. No wonder Ryan is a career 43-19 as a starter in the regular season with a 61 percent completion rate, 95 touchdowns and 46 interceptions.

But in Ryan’s two career playoff appearances, both of them losses, he was sacked a combined eight times (three by the Cardinals in 2010 and five by Green Bay last season), pressure that resulted in him throwing more interceptions (four) than touchdowns (three).

Ryan also could have the benefit of unfamiliarity, considering many of the Giants have never faced him. He lost his only game against Tom Coughlin’s team, completing 26 of 46 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-31 defeat at the Meadowlands in November 2009.

“The good thing is that I know a little bit about them having faced [Ryan] a couple of times when I was in Arizona,” Giants safety Antrel Rolle said. “What I remember about them, and what you see on film, is you have to take away their playmakers and be patient, [and] do the things you do best.”

Coughlin sounded concerned about the Giants’ lack of face time with Ryan and the Falcons, indicating the video projector is going to be his best friend over the next few days.

“We really need to do a good job of studying them because we have not played them in a while and we need to do a really good job in a short amount of time of being informed about this outstanding Atlanta Falcon team,” Coughlin said.

What Coughlin will see, at least from the most recent film, is a quarterback and a team that underachieved the first half of the season and made the playoffs despite beating just two teams (the Lions and Titans) that finished with a winning record.
