Stables - Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle sits in one of the most spectacular settings possible for a castle. Situated on the north-east coast of Scotland, approx 2 miles south of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, it overlooks the North Sea and is truly breathtaking to behold. The site of the castle has been inhabited since Pictish times, with the castle itself under going various stages of construction by its many guests.

In 1650 the castle was under siege by Cromwell’s army who were seeking to destroy the ‘Honours of Scotland’ which had been hidden there. It is said that a garrison of 70 men held out for eight months until heavy cannons began to bombard the castle. During this time the Honours were smuggled from the castle and as a result survived Cromwell’s wrath.
